CHOPIN THE RADICAL
Steven Silverman, piano
Chopin the Radical image

An all-Chopin program illustrating how radically innovative this music not only was, but still is!

STEVEN SILVERMAN, a native of Washington D.C., has performed extensively as a pianist and harpsichordist in solo, chamber, and concerto appearances throughout the United States and at the prestigious Salle Cortot in Paris, France. The New York Times called Mr. Silverman's New York solo piano debut "a splendid affair...his playing had dimension, atmosphere, energy and discipline -- wedded to a sense of rhythm that would not quit.” Bernard Holland, reviewing Mr. Silverman's 1988 New York recital in the Times, said that "it took only a few bars to hear that he is a sound and thoughtful musician, and his recital Saturday gave pleasure." The Washington Post commented that "his playing was blessed by warmth, intelligence, and unshakable ability to capture the essence of the music." The Alexandria Gazette remarked that "Steven Silverman's offering was all that a piano recital can be: an absorbing program executed with technical perfection and individual style." Mr. Silverman performs not only the standard piano literature, but also memorable but less-performed works including both of Charles Ives' Piano Sonatas, Elliott Carter's Piano Sonata, the De Fall harpsichord concerto, and the complete Goyescas of Granados. Mr. Silverman holds the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan. His teachers include Eugene Bossart, Charles Crowder, Benning Dexter, Ann Schein, and the great pianist Andrejz Wasowski.

TONEWHEEL image

TONEWHEEL is a quintet based in New York City, led by bassist-composer Leo Sherman. The project is inspired by stories: new and old, factual and fictional. The stories range from simple, like the feeling of take-off on a plane, to far-reaching travels of the imagination. Each piece is programmatic and features the instrumentalists as characters, the melodies and song structure as the plot, and the harmonic language as a setting.

"Leo Sherman, who I have had the pleasure of working with, not only swings hard but has a depth of harmonic understanding and listens deeply to the musical conversation. One of the new voices on bass for the future.” -Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters).

Contemporary jazz guitarist, Tom Chang leads a quintet featuring some of the finest improvisers in the New York jazz scene. The music will encompass modern jazz to contemporary classical all with a heavy emphasis on groove and melody.

"What separates these tracks from other rock-leaning cuts made by jazz musicians today? It feels authentic. And then the brief funk tune "Scatterbrain" emerges about halfway though the album, there's chicken-scratch guitar and a simple yet heavy beat that screams The Meters. But later, things get eerie, as is someone was mixing funk with a New York jazz edge. That someone was Chang." --Brad Faberman (Downbeat Mag.)
