CONCEPT LAB: JENNY LIN
Seth Boustead, host

Jenny Lin , piano
Concept Lab: Jenny Lin image

Concept Lab is a process-oriented exploration of musical creativity featuring finished works, works in progress, improvised works and collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects in all stages of completion. Run as a collective, Concept Lab is a showcase of the newest of the new and an exciting sneak preview of mainstays on the upcoming New York performance scene.

Concept Lab Volume IV features superstar pianist Jenny Lin performing music from her upcoming album release: The ICEBERG Etude Project, a groundbreaking exploration of keyboard virtuosity in the twenty-first century. Jenny Lin has partnered with ICEBERG New Music, a collective of 10 composers based in New York City, to create a program of solo piano etudes that juxtapose new sounds against some of the most challenging and thrilling works from the existing repertoire.

Ms. Lin will perform a diverse selection of new etudes that run the stylistic gamut from pop-inspired dance music to thorny avant-garde constructions. Each of these pieces will be paired with an existing etude - by composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Glass, Kapustin, Ligeti, and Liszt - inviting listeners to search for connections between virtuosic piano writing from the past and present.

We’ll also hear newly composed pieces from Composers Concordance members Seth Boustead, Gene Pritsker, Roger Trefousse, and Dan Cooper and a brand new work for violin and cello by Matthew Browne performed by Irene Fitzgerald-Cherry and Talia Dicker.

CAMERON BROWN'S DANNIE'S CALYPSO
Lisa Parrott, sop. sax, baritone sax;  Jason Rigby, tenor sax, sop. sax;  Cameron Brown, bass;  Tony Jefferson, drums
Cameron Brown's Dannie's Calypso image

“Cameron Brown and Dannie’s Calypso” was born out of seminal experiences with Don Cherry in the 1960’s and ten years of exhilarating intensity with Don Pullen, George Adams and Dannie Richmond in the 1980’s. In addition to original compositions, the band delights in grappling with Don Cherry’s concept of the “cocktail suite.” These suites involve the harmelodic melding of a number of compositions into a cohesive, continuous set of music. Don originated the concept in the mid-sixties and it can be heard on the “Complete Communion” and “Symphony for Improvisers” recordings on Blue Note as well as on the recently released radio tapes from Copenhagen, 1966 on ESP. In Copenhagen in ’66, any and every song could and did find its way into the musical collage -- from bebop classics to Jobim to Albert Ayler to Ornette and Don originals and beyond. It’s a thrill to continue these explorations with a group of astounding improvisers.

IGOR LUMPERT QUARTET
Igor Lumpert, tenor sax;  Matt Mitchell, piano;  John Herbert, bass;  tba, drums

Igor absorbs the clatter and racket of the once (and maybe once again) great city of New York. Fragmented words that you pass on the street or that seep into your ears in bars. He can make everyone in a room grow silent enough to hear his breath over the long notes of a ballad. The way he plays bop makes you feel like you're in a fight for your life. The folk music of the Balkans is in his blood and bones, and he weaves extended lines over 11/8 like it’s a two-beat polka. He can veer and swerve outside the margins, leaving structure and melody in the dust and turning sound into emotion and making you feel like you’re being psychoanalyzed.

ENTERTAINING SCIENCE: THE BIG BANG AND ITS BOUNDARIES

Entertaining Science: THE BIG BANG AND ITS BOUNDARIES image

Stellar physics and music with Stephon Alexander and Robert Dick

The “music of the spheres” has been a topic for natural philosophers since ancient Greece, and Johannes Kepler even deduced what the solar system must sound like in concert, if we had the ears to hear.

Kepler’s intellectual descendent, theoretical physicist Stephon Alexander’s favorite formula is Einstein’s field equation, but his research is focused on moving very small and very large objects that extend beyond Einstein’s curved space-time, and even beyond the Big Bang. He is moreover a saxophonist who studied with Ornette Coleman, the late composer and performer who extended space-time in his own fashion.

The flute is the oldest surviving instrument of our species, with specimens made of swan bone over 35,000 years old. It too has apparent boundaries of technique and approach. Joining Dr. Alexander is the master flutist, Robert Dick, who has pushed these boundaries further than anyone else in the modern era.

Stephon and Robert will provide “stellar” physics, music, conversation, and boundless debate on this inaugural show of the 16th year of Cornelia Street Café’s Entertaining Science series.
