CNQ (Curtis Nowosad Quintet) is a band that aims to bridge the gap between jazz tradition and present. Led by Canadian-born, NYC-based drummer Curtis Nowosad, the band features some of NYC’s most exciting musicians: Marquis Hill on trumpet, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Michael King on piano and Barry Stephenson on bass. CNQ will be performing original compositions by the leader, as well as drawing from a repertoire of daring and inventive arrangements of music by artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Gil Scott-Heron, Pink Floyd, 2PAC and many others; much of this repertoire appears on both of Nowosad’s albums, including the WCMA-winning, JUNO-nominated Dialectics.

Voxecstatic: Gabrielle Stravelli

For her VoxEcstatic Series debut, Gabrielle will share original compositions from her 2017 release "Dream Ago", which received 5 stars from Downbeat. She will also debut new original material alongside her signature fresh takes on standards, jazz and pop. She'll be joined by longtime collaborators Joshua Richman on piano and Pat O'Leary on bass.

“Listening to the jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli is like imbibing a potent cocktail whose flavor changes as you drain the glass. In the first couple of sips, the predominant taste is the sparkling wine that has drifted to the top, for Ms. Stravelli’s bright, rippling voice exudes a natural effervescence. Before long, it darkens, and the heady liquor underneath kicks in... As she dipped and swooped, twirling notes and phrases with a confidence and playfulness that recalled Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, Ms. Stravelli began interpreting lyrics with a ferocity that her vocal pyrotechnics accentuated..." — Stephen Holden, the New York Times

“Just when the shore of song seems lost for all the fog, the voice of Gabrielle Stravelli cuts through like a lighthouse of emotional integrity." —Tyran Grillo, Downbeat
