JEFF DAVIS BAND image
Drummer/composer JEFF DAVIS is known as the “propulsive force” behind a host New York mainstays. Tonight, Davis brings together New York improvising greats TONY MALABY, KIRK KNUFFKE, JON GOLDBERGER, and MATT PAVOLKA. On his debut album, We Sleep Outside, Jeff Davis showcases his command of a deeply focused and distinctly improvisational style.

Nate Chinen, of the New York Times, says that “We Sleep Outside (Loyal Label) is the restlessly episodic debut by Jeff Davis, a drummer of broad experience in left-of-center jazz circles.”

Bruce Lee Gallanter, of the Downtown Music Gallery, described Jeff Davis’ first disc as a leader as “a powerful debut from one of Downtown’s best drummers.” Davis guides his band just to the edge of chaos while at the same time exercising focus and restraint. It is this approach that results in a sound both minimalist in construction and intensely complex in approach.

MICHAEL ATTIAS QUINTET: TWINES OF COLESION

MICHAEL ATTIAS QUINTET: TWINES OF COLESION image
Twines of Colesion, is one of the year's standout jazz albums, an alternately gritty and romantic set, perched on the border between postbop and the avant-garde. (TIME OUT NY)

They're not twines, exactly, but long, thick ropes that bind the bandleader's sax with that of Tony Malaby. The pair circle and swoop through each other, knotting things when things need knotting, and loosening things when the binds get too tight. Their new Clean Feed disc is series of tension and release strategies, and their piano-bass-drums squad assures that those knots are anything but the square kind. (Jim Macnie, VILLAGE VOICE)

The Tres Amigos CD Release Party image
The Tres Amigos make timeless music. A tight-rope-walking blend of country-western-swing-accordion-folk, The Tres Amigos present high-energy original music and forgotten gems in bold, acrobatic performances. Behind those matching mariachi shirts are virtuosic musicians, delivering the goods in sunny three-part harmony and with all the vibe of your uncle’s old ‘45’s.

Hot on the heels of recording The Tres Amigos Sampler Platter the Tres Amigos have been burning up the pavement, delighting audiences in festival appearances and on college campuses throughout the Northeast. Recent performances include the Living Room in NYC, The Long Island Arts Council, Elvis Fest, Columbia University, and The Ed Cochran Rockabilly Battle of The Bands.

MARK TAYLOR QUARTET CD RELEASE:"AT WHAT AGE"
Mark Taylor, french horn;  Chris Dingman, vibraphone;  Keith Witty, bass;  Tomas Fujiwara , drums
Mark Taylor Quartet CD Release:
To officially announce the release of his third CD, “At What Age” Mark Taylor serves up an interesting mix: warm brass, crystalline percussion and whatever dark woodiness Keith conjures up! The Quartet performs chamber-y, colourful sets improvised from fragments of songs and tantalizing tidbits of melody…

One of only a handful of performers to successfully integrate the notoriously difficult French Horn in jazz and improvised music, Mark has performed and recorded with an array of modern giants including: Max Roach, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Henry Threadgill.

Taylor's Horn sound has been described as "rapturous" and "golden" (Coda Magazine); "as fluid and limpid as (the) flute, and as gnarly as (the) alto." (JazzTimes). His innovative playing has won him recognition by such legendary artists as Max Roach, who said, "Mark Taylor is a virtuoso instrumentalist...there is no one dealing with the french horn or the music the way Mark is doing."

"Taylor plays French horn boldly and lyrically..." — Bob Blumenthal, Atlantic Monthly

Jen Shyu:Jade Tongue image Miranda Lichtenstein
Known mostly for her singing with Steve Coleman & Five Elements, vocalist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/dancer Jen Shyu performs works from both her groundbreaking solo project “Inner Chapters” and her band Jade Tongue's repertoire to Cornelia Street Cafe for one night only Monday, May 30, 2011. Her ancestral and original song improvisations range from mysteriously dark to sensuously ecstatic for solo voice, piano, dance, er hu, Taiwanese moon lute, and East Timorese lakado in multiple languages, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Tetum, and Pinuyumayan (the language of a Taiwanese indigenous group also known as “Puyuma”), featuring her own lyrics as well as those of her other favorite writers. She also performs ancient and original songs on the two-stringed “gat kim” or moon lute, an authentic Taiwanese instrument, and the lakado, a traditional East Timorese bamboo instrument, both which she has been learning from elders in Taiwan and East Timor. Jen Shyu has performed and recorded internationally throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Concertizing as both soloist and bandleader in the avant-garde and creative music worlds in such venues as Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Merkin Hall, BIMHUIS in Amsterdam, Shyu has worked with innovators Anthony Braxton, Mark Dresser, Dave Burrell, Mat Maneri, Ben Monder, and Dave Binney to name a few. Since graduating from Stanford University, she has been awarded fellowships to travel and do research in Cuba, Brazil, Taiwan, China, & East Timor from the Asian Cultural Council and Jerome Foundation. She is currently based in New York City.

EMIL BIZGA QUARTET
Emil Bizga, trumpet;  Jon Davis, piano;  Joe Fitzgerald, bass;  Lieven Venke, drums
Emil Bizga Quartet image
The program consists of Emil Bizga' s own compositions, inspired by contemporary jazz Balkan folklore and Gypsy music. The music breathes of contrasting tension-filled sound collages unheard in modern jazz.

"Emil Bizga is one of the most original and dynamic trumpeters to hit the jazz scene in the last few decades. His blend of Romanian folk music with modern jazz is irresistible, like Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain it blends perfectly. I think Emil is about to emerge as a Jazz star who will definitely influence the next generation of trumpet players." Jack Kleinsinger- "Highlights in Jazz"
