What makes one a parent? Love, genetics, giving birth? This is the question at the center of renowned chemist and playwright Carl Djerassi's newest play TABOOS.
Returning to his scientific roots, Djerassi explores the other side of planning parenthood. When a lesbian couple and an infertile Christian couple each look to have a child, more than biology gets in the way of the idea of the "perfect family."
TABOOS is a story about the unexpected, and often messy, results that arise when emotions and science collide. Join us for a reading of selected scenes from TABOOS, followed by a lively discussion of science in theatre with playwright Carl Djerassi, director Melissa Maxwell, and Megan Halpern of Redshift Productions.
Carl Djerassi is emeritus professor of chemistry at Stanford University and the recipient of many scientific honors, including the American Chemical Society's Priestley Medal, the first Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the U.S. National Medal of Science, and the U.S. National Medal of Technology. His literary works, including poems, novels, plays, and memoirs, have been translated into many languages. Among the most widely known of these are Cantor's Dilemma, The Bourbaki Gambit, This Mans Pill, Calculus, Phallacy, and Oxygen, (co-authored with Roald Hoffmann). Tuey Connell started playing the banjo at age seven and much to his parents chagrin, he has pursued and made a living making music for over two decades. Record deals, European tours, CD, jingle, TV and film dates come and go, but what motivates this Connecticut native is the goal of consistently performing and recording with musicians who are better than he is. Tuey writes, plays and sings grooving Americana music: a blend of the American Songbook with bluegrass, folk, R&B, funk and and rock & roll. It's all good vibes stuff. /www.tueyconnell.com
Trina Hamlin is known for her sizzling blues harmonica and her energy-packed singing and guitar work. Her pure voice and unspoiled powerful presence have gained the singer-songwriter from Minneapolis a steady national following since she began playing solo shows on the downtown New York City club scene. Hamlin attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated with a degree in Professional Music. Afterwards, she moved to New York City and began performing and honing her songwriting skills. She was chosen as a "Most Wanted New Artist" at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and as an alumnus of the Newport Folk Festival, performed to a sold out crowd along with Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams and the Indigo Girls. She has shared stages with Ricki Lee Jones, John Hiatt, Duncan Sheik and Paula Cole and performed on The Late Show with Conan O' Brian with the "Suits" Her music has been heard in the CBS-TV movie "Friends at Last," starring Kathleen Turner as well as on the WB’s "Dawson’s Creek". Hamlin has jokingly said that the blues were created in her native Minnesota. She's only kidding, of course - but nevertheless, there’s "something in the water" there and Hamlin went and had herself a drink. Maybe that’s why she’s one heck of a soulful interpreter. These days, live and on record, Hamlin can be found accompanying herself on guitar, harmonica and piano, working her keen sense of intuition and surrounding herself with music. Natalia Zukerman, a New York-based folk singer-songwriter who's also heavily influenced by jazz and the blues, has an engaging sound that's quite unique. Combining intimate, darkly atmospheric lyrics with sultry, earthy vocals and nimble-fingered guitar and slide guitar playing, "Natalia's voice could send an orchid into bloom while her delta-slide guitar playing could open a beer bottle with its teeth." (Andy Friedman) Since 2004, Zukerman has been touring the country opening shows for roots greats and guitar slingers including Kelly Joe Phelps, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Garnet Rogers, Melissa Ferrick, Catie Curtis, Susan Werner, Ani DiFranco and others. It was on the road that Zukerman formed the relationship with Willy Porter that would lead to producing Brand New Frame and releasing the album on his label Weasel Records. Brand New Frame is a perfect fit with what I’ve always wanted Weasel to represent. The small but mighty team here is thrilled to share Natalia’s record, and tremendous talent, with the world.” -Willy Porter. Smokey-voiced songstress wisely mixes rootsy styles on her fresh and fine Willy Porter-produced "Brand New Frame" album - from torch blues to country swing - if you're a fan of Madeleine Peyroux, Bonnie Raitt or even Amy Winehouse, you'll find stuff to connect with here. - Philadelphia Daily News. nataliazukerman.com Cover $7

"There's something about bassists who lead their own groups and write their own music that strikes a deep chord with me (no pun, intended). Michael Bates's new release is right up there with new releases by Drew Gress and William Parker. The playing by all in the band is passionate and Bates' pulse propels Nachoff, Johnson and Davis through a set of fantastic music. These guys take no prisoners. One of the best releases of 2008! Recommended highly." -Maurice Hogue "One Man's Jazz" CKUW
"[Bates] serves up melodic modernism and contrapuntal elegance" - Time Out New York
"Simply put, Bates has the ability to make a huge impact on the existing state of modern jazz!" - Glenn Astarita, Ejazznews
