We're pleased to invite singer/composer Dana Hanchard back to the 21st Century Schizoid Music series. Dana is likely to show up anywhere in a myriad of musical constellations. Music has brought her to serve on several continents, appearing at concert halls, nightclubs, opera houses and jazz festivals alike. Dana began her career in music in baroque and contemporary classical music as a soprano soloist. Throughout the 1990s, She performed and recorded operas of Handel, Monteverdi and Meredith Monk and Cantatas of J.S.Bach and Music of the Mexican and South-American baroque period. When the invitation came to start up a voice program in Japan, it was an opportunity that allowed her to focus her efforts more in song writing and in musical projects of her own. Her band, the Dana Hanchard Group has been performing in Japan since 2003 playing her originals at Jazz clubs in Tokyo and Yokohama. She has done concert performances of her music around the U.S, Japan and the Middle East. Her latest recording, of all original music, Fool Tale Spinning was released in 2009 on her own Fertile Ground Music label (FGM/Aodoa).

Stephen Weiss is an MFA student in poetry at NYU. His poetry and prose have appeared in 42Opus,, Gourmet, BlackBook,, the Yale Literary Magazine, Out and He is the co-author of Digital Hustlers: Living Large and Falling Hard in Silicon Alley (HarperCollins, 2001), and is a former editor of the Yale Literary Magazine.

Anywn Crawford drinks rosemary tea and lives on the Brooklyn waterfront. She and it dream of Marlon Brando.

Patricia Kim is is currently working on a novel about incest. She insists it's not your ordinary incest story. Tonight, she's pretending to be a poet. Please humor her. She also loves her mini dapple long-haired dachshund. His name is Felix." She's enrolled as a fiction MFA student, but also a very fine poet. She studied with Mark Strand before her studies at Columbia.

Corina Copp recently completed her MFA in playwriting at Brooklyn College and currently lives in Brooklyn. Recent work has appeared in Wild Orchids, Supermachine, Brooklyn Rail, and Aufgabe. Her play, WALTZ, was produced at the East 13th Street Theater this July, and a new chapbook is forthcoming from MinutesBOOKS. She currently serves as the editor of The Poetry Project Newsletter, and is co-curator and host, with THE PLAYWRITING FIRM, of The Twenty-Five Cent Opera of San Francisco.

Alan Feldman has been a New York writer in exile for 40 years. The Happy Genius (SUN) won the 1978 George Elliston Book Award for the best small press collection in the U.S.; a more recent collection, A Sail to Great Island (2004), won the Pollak Poetry Prize from the University of Wisconsin. His poems have appeared in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Poetry, Threepenny Review, Kenyon Review, Southern Review, upstreet, and elsewhere. He teaches a free drop-in workshop at the Wellfleet Public Library (along with Tony Hoagland) each summer, and during the rest of the year at the Framingham Public Library.

Neil Intraub is a writer, performer and lifelong Yankee fan. As co-director of TheatreMoves Inc., a not-for-profit theater company, he helps hundreds of public school students annually write, analyze and interpret short stories and personal narrative for the stage. His short story, "Coffee Shop", received first prize and publication in Beginnings Magazine. He is currently a reader for Boulevard Literary Journal.

Jessica Greenbaum is a poet living in Brooklyn. She was a winner of The Nation’s “Discovery” Prize and PEN’s New Writer awards. Her book, Inventing Difficulty, was awarded the Gerald Cable Prize. Poems from her second manuscript have appeared or are forthcoming in The New Yorker, Poetry, Ploughshares, Alaska Quarterly Review, The Torah: A Woman’s Commentary, and the mighty Salamander, and elsewhere.

This quartet plays the music of Alexandra Grimal. The compositions are long and short structures, based on complex harmony and poly-rhythm. It explores very structured improvisations as well as open forms.

Born in Cairo in 1980, Alexandra Grimal started music at the age of 5 with classical piano. At 13, in Paris, she was introduced to the saxophone. She received her master’s degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (the Netherlands) in 2005 under the direction of John Ruocco. She has also been a student in the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris (CNSM) and in the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki (Finland), with the Socrates Exchange Programme.

For each of the past two years, Downbeat Magazine has acknowledged Chris as a Rising Star on Vibraphone in the annual Critics Poll. A graduate of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, he has performed with many of the world’s greatest jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Marcus Miller, and Terence Blanchard.

Michael Adkins returns to Cornelia Street this October, joined by band members well known to New York’s modern jazz scene. This group’s work together is characterized by a sense of anticipation – each artist explores ideas developed by the entire quintet, with the saxophonist both modulating and amplifying refrains, taking them unexpectedly in new directions, or returning them to an understated simplicity. Russ Lossing’s magnificent sense of play and eloquence find a particularly strong context in the band’s interactions, as do the discerning vitality and sensitivity of Billy Mintz on drums, and John Hébert’s dynamic alteration of working distinctions between inventiveness and groove. The young guitarist Todd Neufeld brings a fresh integrity to the music as well, playing to the moment by turns with intelligent clarity or introspection among veterans.
