9:00PM & 10:30PM  ARI HOENIG QUARTET
Ari Hoenig, drums;  Gilad Hekselman, guitar;  Shai Maestro, piano;  Orlando le Fleming, bass
Ari Hoenig Quartet image
Ari Hoenig (born on November 13, 1973 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is a jazz drummer, composer and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming emphasizing complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members.

Ari is widely noted particularly for his drumming not being relegated to just keeping tempo, or being a side issue to the music he plays in, but rather for elevating drumming as an indispensable part of the performance. Hoenig is also known for his unique ability to modify the pitch of a drum by using drum sticks, mallets, and even parts of his body (such as his hands and elbows). Using this technique, he can play any note in the chromatic scale, virtually any melody, and even improvise on a chord structure in the same way as any other instrumentalist would. Hoenig was born into a family of classically trained musicians. His father being a choral conductor and mother a violinist, he was exposed to classical and folk music at an early age. He played both piano and violin as a child, then rock and metal drums as a teen before settling into jazz and improvised music. Ari has recorded 6 cds as a leader including 2 solo drums cd’s and is currently a Dreyfus Records performing artist. Currently, his group Ari Hoenig and Punk Bop tours worldwide and performs weekly at the legendary New York jazz club Smalls. He is also the co-leader of Hoenig Pilc Project, together with long time musical partner Jean Michel Pilc. Other artists Hoenig has performed or recorded with as a sideman include Shirley Scott, Gerry Mulligan, Jean Michel Pilc, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner, Joshua Redman, Wayne Krantz, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Richard Bona, Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, Toots Thielemans, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Ivan Linz and the Jazz Mandolin Project.

"expansive technique, propulsive time and deep musicality" "his style is characterized by a crisp attack and quick attentive reflexes. Ari Hoenig approaches jazz drumming with manic glee, and yet he's exacting with texture and pulse, an irrepressibly kinetic drummer ." Nate Chinen, NY Times

"Ari Hoenig is one of the most maniacally obsessive, spasmodic and musical drummers in jazz." JAZZ TIMES

8:30PM  JAY CLAYTON
Jay Clayton, vocals;  Jack Wilkens, guitar;  Jay Anderson, bass
Jay Clayton image
There is no instrument as expressive as the human voice. Jay Clayton has made it her life’s work to innovate and push the limits of herinstrument. The Peace Of Wild Things finds Clayton contemplating the words of some legendary poets, most notably e.e. cummings, in the most personal way, just her voice with electronic manipulation.

Jay Clayton is an internationally acclaimed vocalist, composer, and ducator, whose work boldly spans the terrain between jazz and new music. In 1963 she began her career performing the standards on the vibrant New York music scene. However, she quickly became a prominent part of the free jazz movement. Her work in these two worlds led to the development of a highly personal, wordless vocabulary later enhanced by her innovative use of electronics.

“Clayton is an important singer…one who proposed dramatic changes in vocal styles and roles…her musicianship is impeccable." Francis Davis, Downbeat

“As far as vocal innovation goes, Jay Clayton is precariously on the cutting edge.” Fred bouchard, Jazz Times

“More than 20 years after her debut recording All Out, Clayton is still the most adventurous singer in jazz, a specialist in wordless improvisation who’s also expert in distending and finding new meanings in the melodies and lyrics of classic popular songs." Francis Davis, The Village Voice, July 14, 2004

9:00PM & 10:30PM  JOHN MCNEIL/BILL MCHENRY QUARTET
John McNeil, trumpet;  Bill McHenry, tenor saxophone;  Jochen Rueckert, drums;  Matt Penman, bass
John McNeil/Bill McHenry Quartet image
The John McNeil/Bill McHenry Quartet is celebrating the release of "Chill Morn He Climb Jenny," their second CD on the Sunnyside label. Their first CD, "Rediscovery," remains extremely popular, so the boys decided to create a marketing bonanza by hitting the public right between the eyes with another bang-up recording. The cover of their new CD even has a nude woman, historically a sure guarantee of platinum at the very least. John and Bill retain their eerie ESP-like ability to play together, and have fitted drummer Jochen Rueckert with a special electronic helmet so they can control him with their thoughts. The results are mind-blowing. (Bassist Matt Penman was born south of the equator and therefore cannot be controlled.)
