“This no-nonsense jazz pianist in the Ellington and Monk vein (who has occasionally
written for Arts & Leisure) gets a big, ringing sound out of the extreme registers of the
instrument; he also takes a decisive stand against the ultra-sensitive, lush-harmony
tendency of so many young jazz composers. "One Hundred Dreams Ago" (Fresh
Sound), with a trio including the bassist Matt Penman and the drummer Gerald Cleaver, is
by far the best thing he's done, but he hasn't been making records for very long.”
--Ben Ratliff, NYTimes
“Brilliantly performed…very impressive.”
- Ahmad Jamal, jazz piano legend, of ‘100 Dreams Ago.’
"In the era of concept records, this startling young pianist has flipped the script: the
message behind One Hundred Dreams Ago is ‘let's just play.’ Accordingly the trio gets its
bustle on. Ellington's small groups are in the air here, and the pleasure Waltzer generates
is bountiful.”
- Jim Macnie, the Village Voice

“Every once in a while appears music of such accomplishment and beauty that it
completely transcends boundaries of style or
culture to become an instant classic. Sentido, the gorgeous new record by Argentinean
pianist Emilio Solla and his group
Afines, contains such music. Simply one of the best jazz albums of the year”

SYNERGY
Amir Bey, costumes, masks, set design;
Saco Yasuma, compositions, reeds, percussion;
Lou Grassi, drums;
Ras Moshe, reeds;
Chris Sullivan, bass;
Dave Ross, guitar
|
|

Synergy is a high-energy free-style Jazz band, the innovative collaboration between sculptor/designer Amir Bey and
musician/composer Saco Yasuma. The musicians wear masks and original prints on costumes designed by Bey. Bey's set
design often combines long sheets of silkscreen prints on fabric, and suspended mobile-like percussive instruments.
Yasuma's unique compositions range from the forceful to the contemplative. Synergy's personnel includes Ras Moshe, Dave
Ross, Chris Sullivan, and Lou Grassi. This formidable ensemble is known for its power and fearless approach to music.
Synergy's concept is based on weaving the visual and audio arts; the sounds and movements of the musicians are visually
enhanced, and the audio uses of visual art are explored.
"Avant - Jazz altoist Saco Yasuma has a theatrical bent - her group Synergy often appears wearing festive robes and masks
courtesy of Amir Bey. But she's not hiding anything; she's got a killer sound and soulful compositions."
Hank Shteamer, Time Out New York
"If you dig the jazz theatrics of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and Sun Ra, then Amir's "Synergy" is your show. Great
musicians in outrageous attire, musical notes that move around the stage as the music propels them, some kind of art utopia
setting and jazz that will have your conciousness spinning...
"Synergy" is a world apart, where music is language and the stage is a playground for the imagination."
Bob Holman, Artistic Director, Study Abroad on the Bowery
"A vibrant construct of sight and sound. SYNERGY is the right word to describe this "happening". While powerful on their
own, the aural and visual elements seem to play off each other, creating a sum sensation that is greater than the individual
parts."
Rob Blumenthal,
Artistic Director, Harlem Meer Performance Festival
