6:00PM  ARTISTS’ SALON
Robin, Angelo, Poul, and Valerie

This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.
8:30PM  LOW BRASS: JACOB GARCHIK TRIO
Jacob Garchik, trombone, compositions;  Dan Weiss, drums;  Jacob Sacks, piano
LOW BRASS: Jacob Garchik Trio image
Trombonist Jacob Garchik (the Lee Konitz New Nonet, Slavic Soul Party!, Steve Swallow/Ohad Talmor Sextet) presents elegant compositions reflecting a range of influences including the atonal romanticism of Berg, the crystalline harmonies of Messiaen, the rhythmic complexity of Balkan and Indian music, and the earthy melodies of Duke Ellington. A bass-less trio of some of the busiest and most versatile young players on the New York scene, with plenty of space to explore their creative imaginations.

"Refreshingly sleek... a refined sense of line in space and a relative disinterest in proclaiming overt jazziness. These musicians are in motion, and it will be interesting to see where they go next."
- Bill Shoemaker, Point of Departure

Curtis Hasselbring, trombone;  Chris Speed, tenor saxophone & clarinet;  John Hebert, bass;  Ches Smith, drums & percussion
LOW BRASS: Curtis Hasselbring's New Mellow Edwards image
Curtis Hasselbring, a resident of Brooklyn, NY, is a trombonist, guitarist and composer. He has appeared on dozens of recordings with many artists including Medeski, Martin and Wood, Matt Darriau, Tom Harrell, Gunther Schuller and Roberto Rodriguez. He has performed internationally with many of the above-mentioned groups in addition to projects led by Frank London and Anthony Coleman and Dave Douglas. Curtis mixes up his musical life by playing everything from eastern european brass band music to country rock to electronica (under the alias Curha) and of course, his first passions, jazz and improvised music. The New Mellow Edwards is Curtis's long-standing band who just released their first recording on Skirl Records. Curtis’s composing and the New Mellow Edwards’ playing defies traditional jazz conventions and favors primal garage rock-derived grooves, textural explorations and classically-influenced structures.

"A smart ensemble that harnesses the forward thrust of rock in the service of an almost chamberlike group cohesiveness."
(NY Times)
