New Aires Tango image

The unique collaboration of tango singer Malena Dayen and pianist/arranger David Rosenmeyer invites us to delve into each song as a whole world within itself. The repertoire that New Aires Tango performs is drawn mainly from the golden age of tango singers and writers. Yet music from other styles such as folkloric Argentinean, Mexican and Cuban songs are presented under the same umbrella to reflect on the lineage and influence of the Tango tradition.

This trio has been playing together for close to 8 years and they have a psychic-like ability to communicate musically with one another. Please join them for an evening of new and original music.

“When you look at the sum total of this music—Sanders’ twisted visions, caliginous constructs, lighthearted gestures, and weighty thoughts—you see honesty, integrity, and artistry guided by personal expression. In art, be it musical or otherwise, that’s more valuable than gold.” - All About Jazz

8:35PM  JEFF DAVIS, TONE COLLECTOR
Tony Malaby, tenor sax;  Eivind Opsvik, bass;  Jeff Davis, drums, comp.
Jeff Davis, Tone Collector image

Tone Collector is a formidable trio that pushes the sonic boundaries of texture and color. Performing together since 2004, the trio blurs the lines between what is composed and what is improvised. Tone Collector recorded their debut album live at the Glenn Miller Café in Stockholm, Sweden over a two night run, and is fresh off a spring Midwest tour. Returning to the Cornelia Street Cafe tonight, this trio adventurous is not to be missed.

"Malaby, Opsvik and Davis are deeply sympathetic partners, and their interaction often reaches the highest level of cohesion.” - Nate Chinen (Jazz Times) "Without falling into the predictable game of cat and mouse, these three are capable of a varied and inspired set of improvisational call and response. Tone Collector is the sort of creative improvised music that stands out in the crowd." Cadence Magazine
