8:35PM  TOM CHANG QUARTET
Tom Chang, guitar, comp.;  Quinsin Nachoff, tenor sax;  Matt Clohesy, bass;  Alex Ritz, drums
Tom Chang Quartet image

Contemporary jazz guitarist, Tom Chang leads a quintet featuring some of the finest improvisers in the New York jazz scene. The music will encompass modern jazz to contemporary classical all with a heavy emphasis on groove and melody.

"What separates these tracks from other rock-leaning cuts made by jazz musicians today? It feels authentic. And then the brief funk tune "Scatterbrain" emerges about halfway though the album, there's chicken-scratch guitar and a simple yet heavy beat that screams The Meters. But later, things get eerie, as is someone was mixing funk with a New York jazz edge. That someone was Chang." --Brad Faberman (Downbeat Mag.)

Open Tabs image

Open Tabs is a quintet founded by pianist Santiago Leibson and bassist Shawn Lovato, composers “with a distinctive compositional approach and a knack for finding the right partners to bring it to life” (All About Jazz). Such partners include Eli Asher on the trumpet, Yuma Uesaka on the tenor saxophone, and drummer Mareike Wiening, all who are engaging, sensitive, and fearless improvisers. The collective uses both strict and loose composed frameworks in order to explore different contexts and modes of improvisation. This approach to composition and improvisation results in varying moments including strict rhythmic interaction, displays of dark improvised harmonic structures, and sonic hat tipping to the traditions of American improvised music.

As You Will: Shakespearean Improv image

If there’s one problem with the 884,647 words Shakespeare wrote, it’s that they’ve all been performed already. What about The virtually infinite number of words he hasn’t written...yet? The players of As You Will invite you to a show where we will bring to life all the plays and poetry the immortal bard would have written if he hadn’t gone and died. Huzzah!”
