8:35PM  IGOR LUMPERT & INNERTEXTURES
Igor Lumpert, tenor sax;  Roman Filiu, alto sax;  Chris Tordini, bass;  Kenny Grohowski, drums
Igor Lumpert & Innertextures image

"Igor absorbs the clatter and racket of the once (and maybe once again) great city of New York. Fragmented words that you pass on the street or that seep into your ears in bars. He can make everyone in a room grow silent enough to hear his breath over the long notes of a ballad. The way he plays Bop makes you feel like you're in a fight for your life. The folk music of the Balkans is in his blood and bones, and he weaves extended lines over 11/8 like it’s a two-beat polka. He can veer and swerve outside the margins, leaving structure and melody in the dust and turning sound into emotion and making you feel like you’re being psychoanalyzed.

That’s the thing about Igor: He’s always thinking. Always listening. Always playing. Always living. And always digging so deep that you think: I’m dead. Buried. Six feet underground. And then he digs you back out, and you see the light, and you’re glad to be among the living."--Billy F

KIND FOLK image

When the musicians in Kind Folk first played together at a session in a tiny apartment back in 2014, there was an immediate synergy between them. Months went by before they played together again, but when they did reconvene the same connection was still there. Four years later, after a handful of other sessions and even a failed gig or two, the group is on the eve of releasing their first album, "Why Not", which will come out on Fresh Sound New Talent in the Fall of 2018. Featuring original compositions written by each of the musicians, as well as select songs by Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden and others, they've developed a unique, chordless quartet sound that is all their own. Tonight, they'll be playing all the material from the upcoming album as well as a few other new original compositions.
