BIOMINERALIZATION: THE BEAUTY OF FUNCTION
A mouthful, that word. Yet you feel the implicit paradox in it, of
the soft and the hard. For soft as we are, we have bone and teeth (and wish
they wouldn't fail us!). And there is nothing more beautiful in Nature than
the shelters and solid inner structures that small and big critters alike
have evolved. Lia Addadi of the Weizmann Institute and Joanna Aizenberg of
Bell Labs will introduce us to this exquisite world of structure and
function between the organic and inorganic. Agata Olek (an artist who will
crochet anything from a Venice vaporetto to prostate cancer), working with
actor Carol Haunton, will crochet balloons and a fairy tale to illuminate
a Venus Flower Basket, a glass sponge which "traps" two shrimp in its
interior. Maybe she'll crochet around you; watch out!

OVID’S METAMORPHOSES
Todd Conner, playwright/performer
Todd Conner performs his new translation and solo adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Storytelling stripped to the bare essentials, Conner’s Metamorphoses returns audiences to the very well-springs of the Western storytelling tradition. Conceiving, translating and adapting from Ovid, Conner reaches even further back than his ancient Roman source material to explore the poetic/bardic tradition from which Ovid drew his inspiration. With only his voice, body, a few props, a minimum of light, and a harp (learned specifically for this piece, for which he also composed accompaniment), Conner’s performance is a reminder that in our age of relentless over-mediation and mass-entertainment, it is the individual human being who must remain the essential medium of artistic expression.
Todd Conner, in addition to being a performer, is an award-winning playwright and accomplished director.

Athanata Arts, Ltd. and The New York Quarterly host a pre-publication party to celebrate the launch of the NYQ Poetry Series with the forthcoming release of Ira Joe Fisher's new book of poems: Some Holy Weight in the Village Air.
A "splendid first collection" (Thomas Lux) of original poems by master poet Ira Joe Fisher, also known for his weekly appearances on The Saturday Early Show for CBS. Some Holy Weight in the Village Air "chronicles small-town life, its scandals and secret tragedies and small undoings" (Paula McLain) in language which "often dazzles and is always compassionate, immediate, powerful, and tender" (Kevin Pilkington). Fisher holds an MFA from New England College and currently teaches poetry at the University of Connecticut at Stamford and Pace University. His poetry has appeared in various literary journals and he is the author of the chapbook Remembering Rew, now in its second printing.

Jeff Arundel is a singer/songwriter/producer/guitarist. He released his 5th CD, "Ghost Party" in spring 2005; produced a major label recording (Manhattan/EMI) for new artist, Keri Noble, alongside musical legend,world-renowned Arif Mardin (producer of Chaka Khan, Barbara Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones...); has toured consistently in the United States, Japan and Hong Kong, performing both his original songs and Keri Noble's songs. He also co-wrote several songs on Keri’s Manhatten/EMI label

Rob Arthur is a singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist. As a
keyboardist, the list is far too long to name everyone Rob has worked for, but to name a few: Five For Fighting, Joan Osborne, The Holmes Brothers, Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Will Lee, Keri Noble, etc. Rob's list of production credits is also impressive and as a composer, he has written music for Lifescapes, selling over 2 million copies. This work ranges from "Coctail Party"(inspired by Booker T and the Mg's) to "Timeless Romance"(Edith Piaf-flavored). Keri Noble is a singer/songwriter/pianist extraordinaire. Keri's incredible voice combined with vulnerable and honest songwriting abilities quickly led her to a deal with Manhattan/EMI records in 2003. She made the critically acclaimed Fearless, produced by Jeff Arundel and the legendary Arif Mardin,

Ann Klein is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer. As a
composer/songwriter, she has: toured in Europe consistently for 10 years; written music for three documentaries for French television; written music for THE ENERGY FACTORY (an organization committed to tackling the growing problem of child obesity in the United States.) As a guitarist, Ann has had the honor of playing with Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Joan Osborne, PM Dawn, Toshi Reagon, Keri Noble and Ani DiFranco, among others. She has also produced several artists with her partner, Tim Hatfield, of Cowboy Technical

Nancy Yourke brings 30 years of performing experience to her singing of Jazz Standards and original compositions.
This evening will feature selections from her latest recording: Peanut Butter and Jelly Fish, as well as her own unique approach
to jazz standards.
Born in Davenport, Iowa, Nancy began performing in local blues, funk and rock groups, but early on she was especially
drawn to the improvisational quality of Jazz. After attending the Creative Music Studio an avant garde jazz workshop in
Woodstock NY, she moved to Boston and attended the The New England Conservatory of Music. She won a Down Beat
Magazine Student Music Award for Outstanding performance in the Jazz vocal soloist category. She now makes her home in
New York City.
This unique series features both emerging and established vocalists in styles ranging from
straight ahead, modern to avant-garde and free jazz. Each vocalist will present personal
material that showcases their abilities as interpreters, improvisers, composers and
arrangers. The Cornelia St. Cafe provides an intimate setting to hear these exceptional
artists at a reasonable price!

Jeremy Steig studied flute with Paige Brook, who played in the New York
Philharmonic. He went on to study at the High School of Music and Art in New
York. Paige encouraged Steig to play "jazz" while providing him with
classical tools. Emerging as a leader of the first jazz-rock band, "Jeremy
and the Satyrs," followed by the release of What's New (Verve 1969) with the
legendary Bill Evans, proved Steig's versatility as a young musician.
Steig has played and recorded with a wide variety of musicians, such as Jimi
Hendrix, Tim Hardin, Jim Hall, Big Joe Williams, Junior Wells, Eddie Gomez,
David Amram, Art Blakey, Paul Bley, Joe Chambers, Jan Hammer, Johnny Winter
and Tommy Bolin. The Beastie Boys have shaped their hit Sure Shot around
