ENTERTAINING SCIENCE: THE NESTEDNESS OF THINGS
Roald Hoffman, Dave Soldier, hosts
Tyler Volk, scientist;
Lemon Guo, singer, composer
|
|
Atoms combine to form molecules, molecules combine to form single-celled organisms. When people come together, they build societies. As musicians work they build compositions. Might there be general processes we can identify in the nestedness of things? NYU’s Tyler Volk dares to present an inclusive natural philosophy, from his new book Quarks to Culture: How We Came to Be. Volk posits a rhythm of “combogenesis” that created a grand sequence of fundamental levels. New things with innovative relations on each level were built-up from combination and integration of prior things. Themes unfold within the sequence, as physics and chemistry led to biological evolution, and biological evolution to cultural evolution.
Columbia University's singer-composer Lemon Guo joins the show with a striking musical performance that merges odd sounds in its own non-linear combogenesis. Themes such as real vs imagined past, nature vs the idea of nature are evoked. There might be a duet of overtone singing and killer whale singing, or a shadow puppet show that dances in smog pollution data. Prepare to be startled and moved.

Two superb singers. Two sets. One cover. Alexis Parsons is a New York City based vocalist of Greek
and Swedish decent. She has spent a lifetime honing a uniquely personal vocal style and fiercely independent
career. The long and often arduous journey through the years has stamped her rich alto voice with warmth,
wisdom and a flexibility borne of the eclectic musical roads she's traveled. During the past two decades,
Alexis has led a variety of bands, showcasing her distinctive interpretations of both standard and lesser-known
works in the jazz canon. As a bandleader, she has shown exceptional skill and a discerning ear in selecting
accompanists. Her trios have included a host of celebrated artists, including pianists Frank Kimbrough, Arturo
O’Farrill, David Berkman, and Lynn Arriale among others. Manning the bass have been top call performers
such as Drew Gress, Dean Johnson, Cameron Brown and Sean Smith. And behind the drums, Matt Wilson and
Willard Dyson have provided swinging and sensitive grooves. Alexis graduated from the Manhattan School
of Music. "Alexis Parsons" - List of Best CD's of 2012 - DownBeat Magazine "....she deserves as much
credit for her storytelling abilities as she does for her singing. She inhabits these songs as if they represent

QUINSIN NACHOFF'S ETHEREAL TRIO CD RELEASE
Quinsin Nachoff, tenor sax;
Mark Helias, bass;
Dan Weiss, drums
|
|
Celebrating the Ethereal Trio's debut on Whirlwind Recordings!
Quinsin Nachoff is known for his unique merger of modern jazz and contemporary classical music, venturing to
the edges of both idioms, while dancing elegantly along the uneasy borderline between them. The trio teams
Nachoff with two of modern music's most forward-thinking artists: bassist Mark Helias and drummer Dan
Weiss. Both are inveterate explorers well versed in absorbing a variety of complex musical vocabularies and
expressing them in a personal and compelling fashion. The singularly ethereal feeling of this music can be
credited to Nachoff's astute compositions, which blend methodically composed material with free
improvisation in a way that leaves enticing, inspirational space for all three to roam.
"There's a push and pull between the visceral and cerebral, between jazz and modern classical... intensity and
modernity, a brashness and in-your-face confidence of delivery." - Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz
