JOHN MCNEIL/BILL MCHENRY QUARTET
John McNeil, trumpet;
Bill McHenry, tenor saxophone;
Mike McGuirk, bass;
Jochen Rueckert, drums
|
|
Trumpeter John McNeil and tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry have
formed a new quartet. On this, their second gig, expect to hear
a wide variety of styles and improvisations that challenge the
spell-checker in all of us. Even without a chordal instrument, the
band produces a range of color that constantly surprises. Boring,
they are not.
With bassist Mike McGuirk and drummer Jochen Rueckert.

MARK HELIAS; OPEN LOOSE
Mark Helias, bass;
Gerald Cleaver, drums;
Tony Malaby, sax
|
|
"The trio's name "Open Loose" refers
not only to its musical style, but to Mark
Helias' compositions which are written with
plenty of space in them, and are designed to
be interpreted openly and loosely. They allow
for seamless transitions between composed
passages and improvisation, never easy to
achieve.
This threesome fully exploits the creative
possibilities of the compositions, never
opting for a clichéd theme-solos-theme
format. The group has the knack of starting
with a rather loose - sometimes even
ramshackle - piece and slowly allowing it to
evolve until it emerges as a tight theme.
Open Loose has been touring for six
years and has released three CDs."

KNOWING WOMEN
A new play by SUZANNE LOGAN, directed by CHRISTINE CRAWFIS
Ruth Berg;
Deanna Deignan;
Diane Love;
Elyse Knight;
Linda Swenson
A new play based on Suzanne Logan's conversations with five women in their nineties. Though in life none of the five met, Logan invokes a playwright's prerogative and sets them on the stage together, where they laugh, quibble, weep, joust and cavort their way through nearly half a millennium of collective living. Politics, art, religion, other women, men, sex, death and what, if anything, lies waiting for them in the great beyond are just a few of the topics they tackle.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER ACT
Katherine Eban;
Elinor Fuchs
This is an event very close to our heart. Elinor Fuchs has been a friend, mentor and champion of our Minister of Culture for going on thirty years. Now she and her daughter Katherine Eban share the stage at Cornelia Street to read from their wonderfully compelling and totally different new books.
Katherine Eban is an investigative reporter whose new book, DANGEROUS DOSES: HOW COUNTERFEITERS ARE CONTAMINATING AMERICA'S DRUG SUPPLY, already has people's hair on fire. ABC's 20/20 is planning a segment on it, and Eliot Spitzer has announced an investigation into the major drug wholesalers.
Elinor Fuchs, an award-winning theatre critic who teaches at the Yale School of Drama, has just published MAKING AN EXIT: A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DRAMA WITH ALZHEIMER'S, MACHINE TOOLS, AND LAUGHTER. Fuchs was
compared to Augusten Burroughs, David Sedaris and Anne Lamott in the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and praised in the Los Angeles Times for a story of "humanity, compassion, and dignity."
Eban thanks Fuchs in her book, but Fuchs makes Eban a character in
hers. This will be the first time mother and daughter have read from their books at the same event.

JOSH IRVING QUINTET
Josh Irving, saxophones;
Alan Ferber, trombone;
George Dulin, piano;
Ike Sturm, bass;
Greg Ritchie, drums
|
|
"The Josh Irving Quartet deserves recognition and greater access to the
jazz community.
The music is thoughtful, beautiful, sophisticated, and
well-constructed.
Their style may be thought of as a combination of straight-ahead with a
dollop of free jazz... They play intelligently as a band and as
composers they are innovative re-interpreting known terrain. This
Quartet deserves further listening."

9:00 Nick Mancini Collective
The musicians of NICK MANCINI COLLECTIVE
vibraphonist Nick Mancini, organist Matthias Bublath
and drummer Dave Berger, use the music of Horace
Silver as a jumping-off point for their fresh,
incisive and occasionally comedic arrangements.
A dynamic fixture of the NYC jazz scene, Mancini
decisively leads this energetic trio through a tightly
knit set of burning, straight-ahead jazz flights,
moody vamps, gospel romps and Eurodance breakdowns.
Witness the vibrant and evocative nature of this trio
of masters as they deliver a continually evolving
stream of musical settings that are all at once
spontaneous, reminiscent and unmarked.
10:30 Tim Collins Group featuring Ingrid Jensen
"An exceptionally bright and brisk live jazz group featuring vivid jazz vibes, lighting up a
full-spectrum sound. Incorporating influences from Funk, Rock and Latin styles with sassy
backbeats and forthright piano punctuation, this east coast group is one that jazz
connoisseurs will be talking about. With outstanding compositional integrity, this is truly a
meeting of voices, a group performance with one, cohesive vision. "
