THE FRINGE celebrates their newest CD Live at ZeitGeist
with special guest Joe Lovano
The Fringe are one of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene. Originally
formed back in 1971 by tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman,
and drummer Bob Gullotti as an outlet for their free jazz improvisations, The Fringe have
entertained and enlightened Boston area jazz audiences for over 30 years. Bassist
Appleman left the band in 1985 to become Chairman of the Bass Department at Berklee
College and was replaced by veteran bassist John Lockwood.
Along with their impressive tenure with The Fringe, Gullotti, Garzone, and Lockwood are
in great demand as session players and have played with many of the greats of
contemporary jazz. Along with keeping up with a busy performance schedule, each of
them are well-respected educators helping to inspire the jazz musicians of tomorrow.

STORYTELLING
Barbara Aliprantis, host
Barbara Aliprantis;
Ken Corsbie
Two award-winning hyphenated American stoytellers--one born in Greece, the other in Guyana.
KEN CORSBIE--no-one else perceives and comments on Caribbean life and living as multiple award winner Ken does--with both comic and not-so-comic viewpoints and a whole lot of subtlety in between. This evening, using Caribbean oral/aural poetry (April is national poetry month), he'll report on the indiscrimiate and often bizarre nature of the weather from the Bible, right on through recent floods and hurricanes in Asia, California and the Caribbean.
BARBARA ALIPRANTIS, curator of this series, teams up tonight with Ken for some innovative tandem telling and then this self-proclaimed "daughter of the Aegean" shares snippets from her immigrant childhood played ot on the concrete sidewalks and stoops of BVrooklyn, full circle to her adult life in the bustling multi-ethnic borough of Queens.

Arturo O'Farrill y Riza Negra - Explorations in Latin Jazz

composer/bandleader Chico O'Farrill and musical director of the
Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, performs at the
Cornelia Street Cafe every second Tuesday of the month.
Arturo is currently on tour w/ the Lincolin Center Afro-Latin Jazz
Orchestra throughout the United States and recently had a
premiere performance in Shanghai, China, yet he is still making
time for his Y Riza Negra performances at Cornelia Street.
One of the highlights of this incredible musical opportunity, for
both listeners and younger musicians: Arturo, the consummate
teacher, is offering both a student discount rate and the
opportunity for jazz students to sit in with his band during the
second set.
This performance is a rare opportunity to see this high-energy,
exceptionally gifted artist perform with his trio in the intimate

Back in the 30’s and 40’s bluesy,
comedic, swing musicians like Louie Jordan and Cab Calloway
made some great music that still sounds fresh today. Yiddish
was a pretty active street language in New York City at that
time, and it was woven into the music. You had Slim Gaillard
singing "Matzo Balls", Mildred Bailey recording "A Bee Gezindt",
and Calloway’s hysterical yiddish/gibberish cantillation intro to
"Ot Azoy" (That's the Way).
Paul Shapiro celebrates this interplay of 40’s hipster
swing with some Yiddish thrown in at the Cornelia Street Café.
Calling it the Ribs and Brisket Revue*, the
saxophonist/composer features Babi Floyd, (of Keith
Richard's Expensive Winos et al) and
Cilla Owens (one of New York’s best kept
secrets). They will be backed by musicians from
Paul’s CD ”Midnight Minyan”, on Tzadik Records, which was
released lastyear.
*Paul was visited in a dream state by the ghost of Fats Waller
who convinced him that R&B originally stood for Ribs & Brisket

GNU VOX – OUR NEW VOCAL SERIES: MARGUERITE JUENEMANN TRIO
David Devoe, curator
Marguerite Juenemann, vocals;
Ben Monder, guitar;
Ben Street, bass
|
|
|
Marguerite Juenemann is a consummate vocalist, improviser, and arranger who
is widely
acclaimed in the US, Europe and Asia. She has performed with jazz luminaries Benny
Goodman, Clark Terry, Teddy Wilson, Michael Brecker, Richard Davis and Art Lande.
Marguerite has been featured at historic venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall,
Playboy Jazz Festival, Aurex Jazz Festival and clubs including Duke's Place, 606, and Lush
Life. Before embarking on a solo career, Marguerite was a founding member of the
Grammy-nominated vocal group, Rare Silk. Her rich timbre, captivating melodic
interpretations, and exciting rhythmic ideas put her in the upper echelon of jazz singers
working today. This concert will commemorate a 10 year reunion of these three fine
musicians working together. Both Monder and Street were on Marguerite's first CD, 'By
Whose Standards' (Juenetunes) which received exceptional critical praise. Tune choices for
the evening will include some obscure standard material by composers such as Horace
Silver, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and some of Ben Street's favorite Cole Porter and
Gershwin selections, along with transcriptions not usually offered by vocalists.
This unique series features both emerging and established vocalists in styles ranging from
straight ahead, modern to avant-garde and free jazz. Each vocalist will present personal
material that showcases their abilities as interpreters, improvisers, composers and
arrangers. The Cornelia St. Cafe provides an intimate setting to hear these exceptional
artists at a reasonable price!
