Son of Pony image
The Friday night legendary open mic poetry series.

Arrive before 6 pm to sign up.

Rick Mullin featured poet.

Rick Mullin is a journalist and painter whose poetry has been published in several print and online journals, including Relief, The New Formalist, Contemporary Sonnet, and The Barefoot Muse. His poem “Shrine to Satan” was nominated by Shit Creek Review for a Pushcart Prize in 2007. While Mullin writes almost exclusively in metrical verse form, he has a penchant for the unconventional. His new chapbook, Aquinas Flinched, for example, includes a three-part explication of The Theme from Shaft made up of a sonnet, a villanelle, and a segment of free verse. Mullin will read from Aquinas Flinched, which is published by Modern Metrics, New York, as well as from a work in progress,… which is something completely different.

9:00PM & 10:30PM  ALICE - CD RELEASE PARTY
Seth Fruiterman, vocals, accordion;  Kyle Saulnier, woodwinds;  Leena Gilbert , violin;  Amali Premawardhana, cello;  Michael MacAllister, guitars;  Moppa Elliot, bass;  Rohin Khemani , tabla, percussion
Alice - CD Release Party image
With Seth's beautifully subtle soundscapes and Kyle's infectious intensity, the two highly-caffeinated composers have created Alice, a unique outlet for their original compositions as well as their you've-never-heard-it-like-this covers. Drawing from influences as varied as classical music, folk, jazz, rock, pop, commercial jingles, and even video game music, Alice brings a seductive, singer-songwriter quality to all their performances. Equally at home in both a complicated written arrangement and a spontaneous group improvisation, it is a unique, genre-less sound that is alluring, accessible and organic.

9:00PM & 10:30PM  ANDREW RATHBUN QUARTET - CD RELEASE
Andrew Rathbun, saxophones;  Shane Endsley, trumpet;  John Hebert , bass;  Jeff Hirshfield , drums
Join Andrew Rathbun for the CD Release Celebration forAffairs of State his latest release on SteepleChase which is an examination of the political climate in the US over the past seven years.

Andrew Rathbun's Affairs of State is a collection of demanding post-bop pieces, full of tension. "We Have Nothing But Tears" is a haunting melody, as is the elegant, sorrowful "5th Anniversary" (written on the fifth anniver- sary of September 11, 2001). Rathbun and Haskins enrich one another's playing in the richly textured "Paint Peelings," while "Break the Chains" is a driving number, with the band progressing through all 12 keys in eight bars. This is compelling music, regardless of whether or not a listener buys into Rathbun's political views.

Andrew Rathbun is an artist who takes chances with his recordings. You don't hear any paint-by-the-numbers jazz discs from him.

6:00PM  STORYTELLING
Barbara Aliprantis

Storytelling occurs the second Tuesday of every month.

Featured Teller: Bob "Bobaloo" Basey

Format: OPEN TELLING (6 to 7 minute limit), FOLLOWED by Featured Teller

Bob "Bobaloo" Basey, a life–long resident of Staten Island, began his storytelling career as a street performer over twenty years ago while living and studying in Rome. This storytelling troubadour plays flute, bells, drums and guitar and creates a unique blend of stories through song. When he's not presenting programs for the Board of Ed, performing in after school programs, or touring libraries throughout the five boroughs, Bobaloo can be seen traveling around the city making music, singing songs and spinning tales of fancy and stories from around the world. This past November Bobaloo was one of the featured tellers at the annual Ten Day Annual GIMISTORY Festival in the Cayman Islands.

Tonight Tracy Wright, Bob’s wife joins him center stage. Tracy’s day job, as Assistant Principal in an elementary school in Spanish Harlem, takes up much of her time nowadays, but she is a gifted musician/singer/songwriter and often accompanies Bob as he tells his stories and sings his songs. During the summer months, as THE GYPSY FLUTES, Bob and Tracy tour Renaissance Festivals, and travel to Europe telling stories and making music. Wait till you see this dynamic duo in action. They’ll have you singing, tapping your toes and having a GREAT time.
