With Seth's beautifully subtle soundscapes and Kyle's
infectious intensity, the two highly-caffeinated composers
have created Alice, a unique outlet for their original compositions as
well as their you've-never-heard-it-like-this covers. Drawing
from influences as varied as classical music, folk, jazz, rock,
pop, commercial jingles, and even video game music, Alice brings a seductive, singer-songwriter quality to all their
performances. Equally at home in both a complicated written arrangement and a spontaneous
group improvisation, it is a unique, genre-less sound that is alluring, accessible and organic.

Formed in 2001, The Respect Sextet is a powerhouse ensemble dedicated to performing a wide variety of
improvisational musics.
Relying on their explosive energy, rare telepathy, outstanding musicianship, and a deep friendship, Respect pieces together
free improvisations, original compositions, free jazz classics, television commercial jingles, text pieces, jazz standards, game
pieces and more into “a whirling collage,” shouts Exclaim! Magazine, “that ransacks and reshapes the entire jazz tradition,
from New Orleans march to Misha Mengelberg, Sun Ra to Charlie Parker.”
“Forget about the wan, self-conscious eclecticism that’s the bane of the current jazz scene,” wrote Nate Dorward, “this is the
real deal, burning hard and bright.”
The Respect Sextet, through its eclecticism, its devotion to improvisation, its predilection towards swing, and its use of toys
and “little instruments,” has drawn comparisons both to New Dutch Swing and the AACM. Many dialectics are at work (or play)
in Respect's music, in which the serious, heady, and intellectual mingle with the light, comic, and absurd, where compositions
alternate with improvisations, and where tight ensemble work coexists with loose, empathic interplay.
"This is world-class American jazz at its finest and freest. It's pure truth. Respect the truth."

The Here and Now Quintet is excited to be making their New York City debut at The Cornelia Street Café. These five young men all grew up together in Seattle, Washington and have been playing and performing with each other for more than a decade. In the past few years, the members of The Here and Now have moved to the East Coast and have begun to make their marks individually, appearing with some of the most important people in jazz music; a short list of associations include Omer Avital, Allen Pasqua, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Maria Schneider, Danilo Perez, and Dave Holland. The music of The Here and Now Quintet draws deeply from the rich tradition of jazz and pushes forward into other folkloric world music, inspired heavily by recent trips to Israel and Argentina. The Here and Now Quintet is a unique band in that they are very young, and yet very mature as a group, and their music is an experience not to be missed.
The East West Quintet is fast emerging as a new voice in jazz music. With a strong repertoire of innovative and original music, the group showcases the individual talents of its five members while maintaining a cohesive group sound. Since forming in 2003, the Quintet has been playing to packed houses of enthusiastic fans in New York City and throughout the West Coast. Described by one of their fans as Jazz with the energy of a rock band, the Quintet always puts on an exciting show, attributing their fast-growing popularity to their ability to connect with audiences of all types. The group is currently promoting its second CD, The Brooklyn EP, which it released in June of 2006.

Storytelling occurs the second Tuesday of every month.FORMAT: Featured Teller(s)/Open Mic/Swap: 6 - 7 minute limit
FEATURED TELLERS: Joy Kelly * Tom Lisenbee
JOY KELLY, actress, director and storyteller, performs throughout the country in theatres, museums and libraries. Her television credits include Late Night with David Letterman, All My Children and One Life to Live and storytelling segments televised on Manhatttan Cable. She has performed in many one-woman shows and cabarets and has served as Artistic Director for the New Ensemble Actors Theatre and The Floating Hospital Theatre both based in New York She also directs for the acclaimed theatre company, Theatreworks, USA which tours nationwide.
TOM LISENBEE,
after an illustrious forty-year career as a musician (trumpet), in November 2001 Tom said goodbye to the pit of the New York City Opera Company, put his trumpets in his basement, and went upstairs to write poetry and prose. Because of the years spent performing symphonic music in the studios and concert halls in NYC, it is only natural that he writes stories and poetry with "performance in mind." Tom's fiction has been published on-line at Wilmingtonblues.com and Carve.com, and in print, in the Taj Mahal Review.
This April evening Tom, a published poet, returns to our stage to answer the question posed by Edna St. Vincent Millay, "To what purpose, April, do you return again?" Answer: For National Poetry Month, of course!
