MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
Life exists only as one mirror image! Playing macro (our heart on the left, our liver on the right), or micro (all proteins and nucleic acids), nature chooses just one. In Denmark vs Superbowl, a great organic chemist from Aarhus, Karl Anker Jørgensen, tell us how we, emulating and contending with nature, may control the making of one of the mirror-image forms of a molecule. And trumpeter and composer Poul Weis gives us his take on the mirror-image world in and around us.

SANDA & THE NEW GANG
Sanda Weigl, voice;
Lucian Ban, piano;
Alex Harding, saxophones;
Sam Bardfeld, violin;
Jeff Carney , bass;
Gerald Cleaver , drums
|
|
Romanian expatriate singer Sanda Weigl has quite a personal history. She first learned gypsy songs as a child and
found early success as a child star on Romanian television. Later she was a rock singer in East Berlin, and was tossed into
prison for protesting against the communist regime. In the 1990 she moved to the USA and she quickly became known as the
“Gypsy Queen of Downtown New York”.
Avant-jazz neighbors from Sanda’s adopted home New York City, including illuminaries like the Romanian born pianist
Lucian Ban on piano (and arrangements), Alex Harding on sax, Sam Bardfeld violin, Jeff Carney on bass and Gerald Cleaver
on
drums serve as a balancing beam for her thunderous, mezmerizing and sinfully spooky vocal “Gypnastics”.
„
To call Sanda’s voice ‚powerful’ would be an understatement...Her interpretations are dramatic, even theatrical, but never ‚over
the top’...If you’re a fan of vocal ethnic music of any sort, that’s something you don’t want to miss.“
Bill Tilland (BBC World)

GNU VOX: TWO ARGENTIAN SOFIAS - SOFIA KOUTSOVITIS AND SOFIA TOSELLO
David Devoe, curator
Sofia Koutsovitis, Voice;
Sofia Tosello, Voice
|
|
|
Sofia Koutsovitis belongs to a new generation of musicians who imaginatively explore the connection between jazz and contemporary music and the rich musical traditions of South America. An active vocalist, composer and arranger, her primary musical project to date, the Sofia Koutsovitis Group, is grounded in traditional South American rhythms such as chacarera and zamba from Argentina, Afro-peruvian festejo and lando and various Brazilian genres that merge organically with sophisticated harmonies and exploratory improvisations. Singing in Spanish, Portuguese or English, Sofia's voice is alternately graceful and authoritative in interpreting her dynamic original compositions or material by eminent musical poets such as Silvio Rodriguez, Astor Piazolla, Paulinho da Viola, and Chabuca Granda.
Originally from Cordoba Argentina, young vocalist Sofia Tosello brings into the music world, with pureness and delicacy, an interesting new sound. A blend of South American rhythms, passionate Tango, the romantic Cuban Bolero Feeling, Bossa Nova and the harmonic colors of jazz. Ms Tosello has not only her special sound to reveal but also a talent of taking each style and embracing it with her own stamp and authentic flare.
