ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- FIVE FEET HIGH AND RISING
Roald Hoffmann
|
|
From the Ilulissat Ice Fjord in Greenland, to the Pine Island Ice Shelf In Antarctica, New York University's David Holland invites us along on a journey from the extreme North to the extreme South. An expert in polar environmental science, Professor Holland discusses two of his recent field trips to investigate the possibilities of future global sea level change from melting ice sheets. Rolling icebergs, hidden crevasses, unstoppable mosquitoes, plane crashes, sun burn, frost bite, and snow blindness - it's all part of the quest to understand sea level change! Julia Meinwald, a talented emerging songwriter and recent graduate of Tisch's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU, will showcase (with the help of some friends) her original songs of water in all its emotional states.

EIVIND OPSVIK'S OVERSEAS
Kenny Wollesen, drums;
Jacob Sacks, piano;
Tony Malaby, tenor saxophone;
Eivind Opsvik, bass
|
|
Progressive improvised instrumental music from Norwegian-turned-New Yorker bassist and composer Eivind Opsvik
and his band; "Eivind Opsvik Overseas".
The band is drummer Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, John Zorn, David Byrne, Bill Frisell etc.) Jacob Sacks on pianos and
organ,
Tony Malaby (Charlie Haden, Paul Motian) on Tenor sax and on special occasions, Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm
etc.) on pedal steel guitar.
Eivind Opsvik plays bass and writes all the music particularly for this band. The emphasis in his composing is more on
finding a vibe and an unique mood and less on complexity and intellectuality.
The music may best be described as alternative jazz with influences ranging from Brian Eno, Neil Young, Pink Floyd to
Alban Berg and Morton Feldman.
"Overseas" was released in 2003 to great critical acclaim in publications like The New York Times and Downbeat (on
Downbeat's best of 2003 list) and in 2005 "Overseas II" was released.
The band has recently been in the studio to record their third record, all analog recording at Edison Studio in Manhattan by long
time Lenny Kravitz engineer Henry Hirsch.
Over the last five years "Eivind Opsvik Overseas" has been playing regularly at such NYC clubs as 55Bar, Barbés, Nublu and
Zebulon and they have also toured Europe, playing Festivals and Clubs.
Eivind is also heavily involved in numerous other New York projects like Opsvik & Jennings, Rocket Engine and The UP. He
has also recorded with such musicians as Bill Frisell, Craig Taborn and Paul Motian.
”Eivind Opsvik has an unusual gift for writing small, poignant pieces of music. The color and mood of his music, along with its
rhythmic patterns, bleed over into pop, and the sound has a sheer, weightless quality”
Ben Ratliff, The New York Times
"Overseas shows what happens when a musician puts the whole range of his imagination into play”
Downbeat
“Adventurous and stylistically free-ranging, their music is densely-packed with ideas and hard to categorize”

SANDA & ORCHESTRA
Sanda Weigl, voice;
Lucian Ban, piano;
Alex Harding, saxophones;
Charles Burnham, violin;
Sean Conly, bass;
Willard Dyson, drums
|
|
|
Sanda & Orchestra - back from touring Romania where Sanda celebrated a triumphant comeback in her native country w/ her
unique interpretations of Romanian gypsy songs.
Romanian expatriate singer Sanda Weigl has quite a personal history. She first learned gypsy songs as a child and
found early success as a child star on Romanian television. Later she was a rock singer in East Berlin, and was tossed into
prison for protesting against the communist regime. In 1990 she moved to the USA and she quickly became known as the
“Gypsy Queen of Downtown New York”.
Avant-jazz neighbors from Sanda’s adopted home New York City, including luminaries like the Romanian born pianist
Lucian Ban on piano (and arrangements), Alex Harding on sax, Sam Bardfeld violin, Sean Conly on bass and Gerald Cleaver
on
drums serve as a balance beam for her thunderous, mezmerizing and sinfully spooky vocal “Gypnastics”.
"To call Sanda’s voice 'powerful’ would be an understatement...Her interpretations are dramatic, even theatrical, but never 'over
the top’...If you’re a fan of vocal ethnic music of any sort, that’s something you don’t want to miss."
Bill Tilland (BBC World)

Open Loose is back with new music by Mark Helias.
"...Open Loose is no ordinary band, and Atomic Clock is no ordinary jazz record. Im strenuously enthusiastic about it,
as will be all serious jazz fans. Almost classical in its organization and technique, this sequence of improvisations on
tantalizing themes is a 2006 highlight that more people need to hear. Freedom with design, it sounds like the very definition of
jazzthe very definition of America at its best." Will Layman, Pop Matters 12/2006

TOM DEMPSEY/TIM FERGUSON - CD RELEASE

CD Release Party for Tom Dempsey/Tim Ferguson Recording "What's Going
On" on City Tone Records
Guitarist Tom Dempsey and Bassist Tim Ferguson perform in an intimate
duo setting to celebrate their new recording "What's Going On" on
City Tone Records. As stated in their liner notes, “Both of us have
a real affinity for playing duo. This recording helped stretch our
creativity and musicianship, both individually and as a duo. As we
began preparing, it became apparent that after playing together all
of these years, we have developed a unique identity as a group.
Capturing the feeling of playing live, coupled with the repertoire we
chose, proved to be challenging and in the end, very rewarding.
Between the compositions, the arrangements, and the performance, this
recording represents a fresh treatment of these songs that pays
tribute to thesegreat composers.”From the American songbook
standard “Stardust”, to jazz classics like Billy Strayhorn’s
“Isfahan,” the soulful spiritual “Deep River” and the classic Marvin
Gaye soul anthem “What’s Going On,” this CD captures the ear from
the beginning and takes the listener on a fascinating and fulfilling
musical journey.
"What a marvelous duo! Great tunes, terrific solos and careful
listening to each other. Tom Dempsey and Tim Ferguson do it all and
swing!"
