I FORGOT TO LEARN TO FORGET

How do you learn a habit and how can you unlearn it? Why do you not forget how to ride a bike, but it's hard, ain't it hard, to unlearn smoking?

In tonight's exploration of recall and habit, painter and conceptual artist Vitaly Komar will present Three-Day Weekend, interwoven Christian, Jewish, and Muslim symbols that first appeared in his childhood dreams and resurfaced when he discovered the only photo of his intact family in Russia.

Brilliant young violinist Rebecca Cherry, formerly principal violin in the London Symphony, will present selections from The Compleat Victrola Sessions, a collaboration with composer Dave Soldier - an evocation of the allure and danger of addiction in the 1920's, using black and white silent film with nostalgic, surreal virtuoso music.

Neuroscientist Dave Sulzer will explain how the brain integrates wild stabs at success with feedback from the environment, how that underlies habit learning, and why a decision contrary to habit requires so much effort.

Alves' work melds a percussive edge with a lively, fluent right hand."
- John Ephland, Downbeat

Brazilian pianist and composer Helio Alves, has received high praise as an in- demand sideman with Joe Henderson, Yo-Yo Ma, Slide Hampton, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Oscar Castro- Neves and Gato Barbieri, to name but a few. And now, with more than 40 recordings as a sideman - and two at the helm of his own ensembles - he is quite deservedly earning respect as a leader too.

Alves will be playing songs from his second recording as a leader, "Portrait in Black and White" (Reservoir Music), combining straight ahead and Brazilian jazz styles. The release is highlighted by four Alves originals - "Frenzy," "Sambetinho," "Loose Samba" and "Song for Anna" - and features his longtime musical friend Santi Debriano on bass and Matt Wilson on drums.

This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

Jo Lawry, Voice;  James Shipp, Vibraphone;  David Devoe, Voice;  Chris Hoffman, Cello;  James Westfall, Vibraphone
Gnu Vox: Jo Lawry and David Devoe image
Born in Willunga, South Australia, and raised on an almond farm, Jo Lawry lives and plays in New York, with the occasional jaunt north or south along the East Coast. She watches a little too much bad reality TV, but on the in-between is working on music for her quintet and a few other projects. Some career highlights so far have been working with Donny McCaslin on his new project, "In Pursuit" as well as performing with some other jazz greats; Clark Terry, Renee Rosnes, Jon Faddis and Lewis Nash among them. Currently, her joy comes largely from working with some of her friends and heroes: James Shipp, Matt Clohesy, Keith Ganz, Kate McGarry, Ferenc Nemeth, Ben Monder and Steve Cardenas to name a few. When she's not making music, Jo cooks a mean curry and is working on the perfect caprioska.

Vocalist David Devoe has performed with Steve Lacy, Kenny Wheeler, Ben Monder, Ben Street, Butch Morris, The Matt Wilson Quartet, and Mulgrew Miller in venues such as Sweet Rhythm, 55 Bar, Regattabar and Jordan Hall. This new ensemble featuring Hoffman and Westfall features original compositions and arrangements of material from a wide range of genres. "Anyone even faintly interested in the craft of jazz vocal performance needs to get out and hear this guy. I believe that, in the realm of the solo vocal, he's the shape of things to come! If not tomorrow, soon! Then, many years from now, you can say to his groupies--I heard him back in the day. It is rare to hear the high art of scatting practiced at such an extreme level of virtuosity and STILL retain its power to express. You will not regret time spent in the presence of David Devoe." - Dr. William Bauer, author of "Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carer"

“This no-nonsense jazz pianist in the Ellington and Monk vein (who has occasionally written for Arts & Leisure) gets a big, ringing sound out of the extreme registers of the instrument; he also takes a decisive stand against the ultra-sensitive, lush-harmony tendency of so many young jazz composers.”
--Ben Ratliff, NYTimes

“Brilliantly performed…very impressive.”
