8:00PM  VOXECSTATIC: ROSE ELLIS - LIKE SONGS LIKE MOONS
Deborah Latz, curator

Rose Ellis, voice, compositions;  Glenn Zaleski, piano;  Luke Sellick, bass;  Jay Sawyer, drums
VoxEcstatic: Rose Ellis - Like Songs Like Moons image

New York based Dutch vocalist and songwriter Rose Ellis has a remarkable sensitivity for lyrics and melody. She recently released her album ‘Like Songs Like Moons’ which was received by critics as a “first rate debut album” (All About Jazz) and a “refreshing and lyrical centerpiece” (Albore jazz Japan). For her composition ‘Early In The Morning’ Rose received the ASCAP Composers Award 2016 at Lincoln Center.

Rose is “a real storyteller”(JazzFlits) and adds weight to her lyrics with her “crystal clear intonation, adept phrasing, and luminescent spirit” (Dan McClenaghan).

While much of her inspiration comes from jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, Rose always seeks to be original, relating to the world as it is today. Her concerts are intimate, engaging and exceptionally moving.

Christine de Michele aka Compass is a published singer-songwriter who explores life’s curiosities through an ocean-minded lens. In 2017 Compass released her first LP ‘Maritime Cowboy’ - a concept album and character which nods to her past, present and future. After a 30-day public street performance experiment throughout New York City, and a chance encounter with GRAMMY-winning producer, Malcolm Burn (Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith) Compass recorded Maritime Cowboy in the Catskill Mountain town of Kingston, NY.

6:00PM  DESERT FOXX + 1
Louis Cohen, guitar;  Mike DeiCont, bass;  Alex Kirkpatrick, drums;  Levon Henry, multi-instrumentalist
Desert Foxx + 1 image

Desert Foxx joins forces with improviser/singer-songwriter Levon Henry.

Desert Foxx is guitarist Louis Cohen (LA), upright bassist Mike DeiCont (Toronto), and drummer Alex Kirkpatrick (New Jersey). Their music is dynamically extreme and openhearted—rustic and lyrical like Neil Young, filtered through the cosmic fire of Albert Ayler with the patient contemplation of Paul Motian. Their debut release “Kill Together” was recorded and mixed by Yi-Wen Lai-Tremewan, mastered by the great David Torn, and released on the Amsterdam-based label Flea Boy Records.

This is a special quartet performance featuring Levon Henry - a woodwind multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, composer/arranger, and documentarian currently living in New York City.

6:00PM  DOG MAN
A new play written and performed by by Claudette Sutherland

DOG MAN image

A romance of the road, Dog Man summons up a girl's lost childhood of small-towns and farmsteads seen from the back seat of a Buick evoking the yearly journeys made by a girl and her parents as they cross-crossed middle America, racing greyhounds in the 40s and 50s. The daughter in middle age cannot bear to let go of the father she loves more than anyone in the world and in taking care of him, re-lives her itinerant past even as she is losing him.

Listing as Rising Star Vibraphonist at DownBeat critic poll 2017, Yuhan Su continues her journey with her quintet and will return to Cornelia Street Cafe presenting a series of new music entitled Viaje and City Animals. Yuhan's music is innovative, emotional, cerebral and most importantly, always lyrical. Simon Mulligan, piano;  Gene Perla, bass
Simon Mulligan and Gene Perla image

British pianist Simon Mulligan is, according to the Times of London ‘the most abundantly gifted of pianists.’ Pulitzer prizewinning composer Paul Moravec calls him ‘a pianist with complete mastery of the instrument’, while Herbie Hancock says ‘You have a phenomenal touch, man!’ In addition to his extensive discography and vast repertoire, Mulligan’s solo work gains praise from critics and audiences alike, and his collaborations include performances and recordings with Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Leonard Slatkin and Sting. He has performed all over the world, most notably at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, as well as private performances for Her Majesty the Queen and President Barack Obama. His keen interest in film composition led to a long association with composer Michael Kamen, culminating in his performance on the soundtrack to Spielberg’s Band of Brothers. He has led his own jazz quartet since he was thirteen, which has performed in major international festivals. His eclectic work has led to profiles in Downbeat, JazzTimes, BBC Music, Classic fM, and Gramophone magazines, among others. Simon is a recipient of the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Music, and his teachers include Alexander Kelly, Murray Perahia, Alfred Brendel and Alexis Weissenberg.

Gene Perla was raised in New Jersey where he studied classical piano and trombone. After attending Berklee School of Music he moved to New York and began his musical career as a jazz bassist. He has performed and/or recorded with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Elvin Jones, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Chuck Mangione, Joni Mitchell, Buddy Rich, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Stone Alliance, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, and others.
