BR TRIO + One image
An exciting and unique piano trio that combines the openness of modern jazz withBrazilian music, the BR Trio is a breath of fresh air in the world of contemporary music.Working within the traditional instrumentation of the classic jazz piano trio, the BR trio draws on their extensive knowledge of the Brazilian repertoire playing and reinventingstandards by composers like A.C. Jobim, João Donato, Johnny Alf and interpreting newermusic by the next generation of Brazilian composers such as Djavan, Ivan Lins, Rosa Passos and Guinga. This music, however, is presented with an openness and focus onimprovisation and group interaction not often heard in this idiom. It all starts with theamazing chemistry of these gifted musicians.

The BR Trio is Helio Alves on piano, Paulo Paulelli, on bass, and Rogerio Boccato on drums. Three Brazilian musicians who had always been involved with the music ofdifferent artists, are now following their own track, an improvisational adventure, searching for new sounds within the Brazilian musical universe.   www.rogerioboccato.com

DOUBLE CD RELEASE PARTY: Chris Baker Quartet image
We celebrate Halloween with a double CD Release Party!

“I love this alto player, Chris Baker! Where did he come from? …he’s melodic and really musical, but modern at the same time.” Kenny Werner

Greatbend Records is proud to present two of their finest releases to date; Charles Evans/Peter Evans and the Language Of's "No Relation," and Chris Baker's "Everything Is a Blues." The Evans Brother's (no relation) latest CD showcases their concept of sharing the compositional role and exploiting the possiblities of unrelated, inconsistent material. They accomplish this through the use of free-jazz and new complexity supplied by Peter and micro-tonal bebop and tradition from Charles. Altoist Chris Baker combines the basic characteristics of the blues with fresh melodies and modern forms of improvisation. His group approaches traditional settings with modern conversation and dialogue.

6:00PM  ARTISTS’ SALON
Robin Hirsch, host

This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

Jamie Baum, flute, alto flute;  Shane Ensley, trumpet;  Doug Yates, alto sax, bass clarinet;  Vincent Chancey, french horn;  Luis Perdomo, piano;  Johannes Weidenmüller, bass;  Jeff Hirshfield, drums
The Jamie Baum Septet image
With this band, together since'99, Baum explores the connection between improvised music and composition and draws from several influences to create a very personal and refreshing canvas for this unique instrumentation. An extremely talented group, this Septet boasts a cast of in-demand New York players who, leaders in their own right, offer very individual sounds to create an exciting and varied palette.

"...As good as these compositions are, it's the combination of composition and improvising that makes this album so fulfilling. Baum herself is a terrific jazz musician, with impressive control, dynamics, ideas, and swing. With Moving Forward, Standing Still, Jamie Baum has made a serious and possibly significant contribution to jazz."
---(New York) ALL ABOUT JAZZ

“I recall a couple of fine previous CDs (on GM & Konnex) from this fine flutist and composer, but that didn't prepare me for this fabulous gem. Ms. Baum is an extraordinary composer (and) a sensational flutist, taking a number of superb solos throughout this release. This is an immensely engaging work on many levels, I hope I get a chance to hear this septet playing live.”
