Vocalist, songwriter and professional church musician Wendy Gilles is a versatile singer whose warm, inviting voice adapts effortlessly to whichever genre she incorporates into her musical vocabulary. She recently completed her Master of Music from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Dominique Eade and John McNeil and was a featured soloist in ensembles led by faculty and guest artists such as Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Holland and Django Bates.

Vocalist Amy Cervini has garnered acclaim in her home of Canada and adoptive home of New York. Her eponymous quartet, with pianist Michael Cabe, bassist Mark Lau and drummer Ernesto Cervini, has released two albums – 2007’s Famous Blue and 2009’s Lovefool – with track lists comprised of pop tunes from Weezer, the Cardigans and Leonard Cohen, standards from the American Songbook and original pieces from modern jazz composers.

Ms. Cervini pursued her undergraduate studies at New England Conservatory, where she majored in jazz saxophone. She is also an accomplished pianist, but has made her name as a dynamic vocalist. Praised by the Toronto Star for her “freshly appealing voice” and Time Out New York for her ability to “straddle the line between confessional balladeering and breezy swing,” these traits have made Ms. Cervini a regular at venues throughout New York – from the 55 Bar to Carnegie Hall – and around the world.

Drummer Jeff Williams’s credits include early work, with Stan Getz and Dave Liebman’s Lookout Farm during the ‘70s, as well as more recent associations with Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, Joe Lovano, Tony Malaby, and Bill McHenry. Since establishing an additional base in London in 2005 Jeff has performed with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Evan Parker, and Martin Speake.

During the 1990s Jeff issued two CDs of original compositions as a leader, Coalescence (Steeplechase) and Jazzblues (Cathexis). His return to leadership with the current quartet showcases the distinctive compositional qualities of each musician. Over the last year the repertoire has evolved to encompass both individuality and cohesive group identity. John O’Gallagher and Duane Eubanks form a contrasting yet complimentary front line, while John Hebert contributes a wealth of linear, harmonic, and rhythmic variation and substance. All of which provides Jeff with a complete range of expression.

Canada Day is the eponymous debut of Brooklyn-based drummer/ composer Harris Eisenstadt’s two year-old working quintet. This release, the Toronto native’s eighth as a bandleader, documents his book of originals for the band, developed at gigs around New York and beyond. Built around the specific personalities of its members, trumpeter Nate Wooley, saxophonist Matt Bauder, vibraphonist Chris Dingman and bassist Eivind Opsvik, this group has been his primary focus as a bandleader since returning to New York in 2005.

“Nate and Matt are known for their experimental sides,” explains Eisenstadt, “yet both are lyrical players with totally personal sounds in more jazz/song form-oriented contexts. Chris, who I’ve worked with since my 2007 record, The All Seeing Eye + Octets (Poobah), brings harmonic sophistication and a skeletal, shimmering texture that only vibraphone can provide. Eivind is one of the premier young bassists working in New York and I felt instantly at home with his lyrical and rock solid approach. He thinks in song forms even when abstracting material, making him the perfect bass player for these compositions.”

One of only a handful of drummers equally well- known for his work as a composer, Eisenstadt is among the most versatile and prolific musicians of his generation. His eclectic résumé includes studies with some of the most respected names in both improvised music and West African drum- ming, and performances in genres ranging from film and theater to poetry and dance to contem- porary classical and opera. He has performed all over the globe, earned commissions from organizations such as Meet The Composer and the American Composers Forum, and appeared on more than 35 recordings over the past decade.

“Harris Eisenstadt is a model of intelligent ver- satility,” declares Signal to Noise’s Bill Meyer. “Whether he’s leading the band or contributing to the collective, the NYC-based drummer brings discernment and discipline to the proceedings... his playing always seems keyed into exactly what the music needs.” In addition to Canada Day, he also leads Woodblock Prints, a nonet inspired by the ancient Japanese art form, and is an active member of The Convergence Quartet, Sean Moran’s Big Elephant, The Pavones, Adam Rudolph’s Organic Orchestra and the Nate Wooley Quintet.

Regarded as "a composer possessed of both rich imagination and the skill to bring his fancies to life" by Time Out New York, composer and bagpipe virtuoso Matthew Welch (b.1976) holds two degrees in Music Composition, a BFA from Simon Fraser University (1999), and an MA from Wesleyan University (2001), having studied with noted composers such as Barry Truax, Rodney Sharman, Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton. After locating to New York City in 2001, he has worked with a host of other artists such as John Zorn, Julia Wolfe, Zeena Parkins, and Ikue Mori. The eclectic breadth of his interests in Scottish bagpipe music, Balinese gamelan, minimalism, improvisation and rock converge in compositional amalgams ranging from traditional-like bagpipe tunes to electronic pieces, improvisation strategies and fully notated works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra and non-western instruments. Since 2002, Mr. Welch has been running and composing for his own eclectic ensemble, Blarvuster, whose repertoire the New York Times has claimed as "border-busting music; original and catchy." The Dream Catcher's Song is a anthology presenting five emerging Brooklyn writers. These five women bring you on an internal and external journey as they take turns sharing their words. One page you are in 1940's Baltimore, live jazz sounding in your ears; the next you are climbing Mt. Etna, ash staining your fingers. One page you are witnessing the vulnerable place of healing from abuse, another you are in a world where foxes speak. Another page shouts the praise of sisterhood.

Containing poetry, memoirs, fiction, short stories, and personal narratives, the book will reveal the importance of sharing and hearing each other’s stories as it gives you an inside look at one writer's group’s process from inspiration to final work.

Gabriella M. Belfiglio, Kim D. Brandon, Princene Hyatt, Olivia S. Taylor, and Rita REB Wilson will read short selections from this, their debut group publishing effort.

Acclaimed vocalist Aoife O'Donovan has been turning heads all through the music scene for the past 8 years. Called "Americana's newest darling" by USA today, Aoife is a founding member of newgrass sensations "Crooked Still," with whom she tours the world for most of the year. She is also a member of the folk-noir trio, "Sometymes Why." 2009 has seen Aoife on stages from the Glasgow to San Juan Island to Copenhagen, with stops across Europe, Canada, and the USA in between. Though she doesn't often play shows featuring solely her own material, her quirky original songs have garnered praise worldwide. Originally from Newton, Massachusetts, Aoife has just made the big move to Brooklyn, NY.
