HYDROGEN JUKEBOX explodes POEMusic on the tongue with our ever-rockin’ house improv band THE NE’ERDOWELLS and YOU at NYC’s hottest musically-infused Open Mic!
This month’s featured act is the poignantly insightful and delightfully engaging Amber Atiya, jamming with the band (Davey Patterson, guitar; Matt Riganese, piano; Dave McKeon, bass; and Ry Pilla, drums).
AMBER ATIYA’s electrifying presence in the New York poetry scene brings an intense body of work that slices fresh emotional grooves on both stage and page. She has performed at Theater for the New City, Fashion Institute of Technology, Lehman College, Nuyorican Poets Café, and many elsewheres. Her poetry, which often speaks to the joys and sorrows of queerness, has been published in Tribes Magazine, Word Riot, Cartier Street Review, and Drunken Boat, and she is co-founder of a weekly women's writing group, currently celebrating its nine-year anniversary.

Tonight: BODY AS FUNHOUSE MIRROR: Cultural Reflections On The Human Form - with Amy Herzog (http://qc-cuny.academia.edu/AmyHerzog) presenting the first in a series of three lectures: The Pornographic Arcades Project: Adaptation, Automation, and the Evolution of Times Square (1965-1975).
Amy Herzog is associate professor of media studies and coordinator of the film studies program at Queens College, CUNY. She is the author of Dreams of Difference, Songs of the Same: The Musical Moment in Film (Minnesota, 2010). She recently curated "Peeps," an exhibition at The James Gallery, CUNY Graduate Center, on the dialogue between pornographic peep loops and contemporary art practices.
Observatory is an art and events space in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Founded in February 2009 by a group of seven artists and writers, the space seeks to present programming inspired by the eighteenth-century notion of "rational amusement." Observatory is especially interested in topics residing at the interstices of art and science, history and curiosity, and magic and nature. Part of the Proteus Gowanus arts complex, Observatory hosts frequent screenings, lectures, classes, and exhibitions.

Tonight, Classical At The Cornelia welcomes Olga Vinokur on piano, joined by Dave Eggar on cello, Chuck Palmer on percussion, Pauline Kim on violin, and David Kalhous on piano, performing works by George Gershwin, Fred Hersch, Marc Mellits, Earl Wild, Shostakovich, Scott Wheeler, Wolfgang Rihm, and Bach/Deoro.
Olga Vinokur is a dynamic pianist who is gaining recognition for her impassioned performances and elegant musicianship. Her career has taken her across the North America, Israel, Russia, England, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, China, Czech Republic and Canada where she has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and with orchestra. Ms. Vinokur has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, New York’s Town Hall and is a frequent performer at Bargemusic in New York. She has been heard on WNYC’s Soundcheck with John Schaefer in New York, Israeli “Voice of Music” radio station, Russian National Public Radio, Czech National Radio, CKWR radio station in Canada among others. Olga Vinokur began her studies in Russia. Moving to Israel, she received her Bachelor’s Degree and Artist’s Diploma from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel-Aviv University. She pursued her Master and Doctor of Musical Art Degrees at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
Grammy Nominated Artist, Dave Eggar has performed throughout the world as a cello soloist including appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Barbican Center London, the Hollywood Bowl, and many others. A virtuoso in many styles, he has performed and recorded with artists such as the Who, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Bell, Dave Sanborn, Evanescence, Patti Smith, Roberta Flack, Donna Summers, Coldplay and many others. Dave holds a doctorate from the prestigious Julliard School and has won awards from Time Magazine, the Leonard Bernstein Foundation, ASCAP, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Jennifer L. Knox’s new book of poems, The Mystery of the Hidden Driveway, is available fromBloof Books. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, and four times in The Best American Poetryseries, including the 2011 edition. She is currently at work on her first novel.
Amy Lawless is the author of Noctis Licentia (Black Maze Books), a four poem pamphlet from Greying GhostPress, and the forthcoming chapbook Elephants in Mourning (Detroit). She is a 2011 New York Foundation for the Arts fellow. She is from Boston but lives in Brooklyn.
Marion Wrenn is Co-Editor of the Painted Bride Quarterly. She is a media critic and cultural historian who earned her PhD from NYU’s Department of Culture and Communication. Her essays have appeared in Practicing Culture, Patronizing the Public, and American Poetry Review.She teaches writing at Princeton University where she is on the faculty of the undergraduate writing program.
