LISANNE TREMBLAY “ECDYSES” image

Lisanne Tremblay's latest project “Ecdyses” explores the ongoing processes of self-transformation through a journey that travels organically from various world music inspirations to free collective improvisations. Her new ensemble pushes the boundaries of instrumental roles and navigates through a renewed sonic world of intricate textures to express shared human experiences such as vulnerability and strength. The New York- based violinist and composer has shared the stage with outstanding artists such as Greg Osby, Liberty Ellman, Stephan Crump, John Hébert, Gerald Cleaver, and E.J. Strickland, and her distinctive approach captured the attention of many through her debut album “Violinization,” which was released in 2015 on Greg Osby’s “Inner Circle Music” label. “A gifted improviser with a highly unconventional yet utterly arresting melodic gift, Lisanne puts the full expressive powers of the violin on display and makes a compelling case for the instrument's broader inclusion in modern jazz.” Seton Hawkins, Hot House Jazz Magazine

ENTERTAINING SCIENCE: ASTROBIOLOGY, ACCORDIONOLOGY

Entertaining Science: ASTROBIOLOGY, ACCORDIONOLOGY image

Einstein once said that the most incomprehensible thing about the cosmos is that it's comprehensible. He didn't go far enough, the truly incomprehensible thing is that the universe can be comprehended by itself! Somehow this big, crazy universe has built structures out of itself capable of self-awareness, and capable of turning around and examining the universe in turn - the ultimate bootstrap. Piecing together how this happened is one of the 'big questions' facing science. Join astrobiologist and author Caleb Scharf in examining some of the evidence so far, from cosmic webs and dark matter, to trillions of planets, Earth's apparent unusualness, and new ways of thinking about the phenomenon we call life.

Joining in this exploration of life in the universe is the exciting new musical group The Yorkvillians. From the term for residents of the Yorkville neighborhood on the UES of Manhattan - this instrumental combo led by composer-bassist Dan Cooper and composer-accordionist William Schimmel makes its Cornelia St. Café debut. With Michiyo Suzuki - clarinet, and Max Maples - drum set. Original compositions, including Cooper’s ‘El Planeta Rojo’ and ‘Moon Almost Alive,’ reflect upon the evening’s theme.

VoxEcstatic: Rose Ellis - Like Songs Like Moons image

New York based Dutch vocalist and songwriter Rose Ellis has a remarkable sensitivity for lyrics and melody. She recently released her album ‘Like Songs Like Moons’ which was received by critics as a “first rate debut album” (All About Jazz) and a “refreshing and lyrical centerpiece” (Albore jazz Japan). For her composition ‘Early In The Morning’ Rose received the ASCAP Composers Award 2016 at Lincoln Center.

Rose is “a real storyteller”(JazzFlits) and adds weight to her lyrics with her “crystal clear intonation, adept phrasing, and luminescent spirit” (Dan McClenaghan).

While much of her inspiration comes from jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, Rose always seeks to be original, relating to the world as it is today. Her concerts are intimate, engaging and exceptionally moving.
